In just a few months' time, the Beaney Art Museum and Library will re-open its doors to the public.

The Beaney is an Art Museum and Library situated in the heart of the historic city of Canterbury. Following a careful repair and restoration project, the building will re-open to the public in September 2012. This fabulous new facility will provide state-of-the-art exhibition galleries, community spaces, explorer areas, excellent educational facilities and a varied programme of interactive events for all ages.

In the library, there will be more than 50,000 books, CDs and DVDs on offer. Amongst its 1,141 book shelves will be something for everyone. There will also be music and spoken word CDs, film, TV and documentaries on DVD. Alongside all of this, a varied programme of activities and events will be held regularly from baby bounce and rhyme time to talks from prominent authors. Visitors will also have access to a range of useful local and family history resources as well as free public internet access.

Did you know?

The building takes its name from its benefactor, Dr James George Beaney, who died in 1891 and left money in his will to the city of Canterbury. The city council had the Beaney Institute (as it was formally known) designed and built using this funding, along with some of its own resources. The architect was A.H.Campbell and the building was officially opened on 11 September 1899. Canterbury City Council continues to own the Beaney and provides the museum and art galleries - Kent County Council is the library authority. The two councils are currently working in partnership on this restoration project with the support of a range of stakeholders and funders.
