The project will conserve, repair and restore the existing Victorian building. A new extension will double the building’s size, creating more and better space for museum and library services.
The Beaney Institute has been home to one of Canterbury’s main museums and its library since 1899, and a focus for cultural and heritage activities. It is now in need of major improvement.
Both the library and museum have outgrown their space. Canterbury’s library is the busiest in Kent but has been operating in cramped conditions. The museum, gallery and art collections have insufficient room for display, with many items stored off site, making them inaccessible to most visitors.
This project will restore and enlarge an important heritage building, providing a fully accessible and attractive facility for visitors and the local community. The Beaney will be transformed into an art museum and library to be proud of.
When you enter the Beaney you’ll discover a world of exploration and interesting things to see and do. Inspiring art, fascinating objects, a modern library brimming with books – they’ll all be here for you. The Beaney will also be a place to meet friends, attend talks and events, buy beautiful gifts and souvenirs, or take part in activities for all ages.
At the heart of the community, the Beaney will welcome everyone. Objects, images, stories and ideas will come to life in an open and friendly environment. Visitors will be able to discover their own creativity through participation in all sorts of events and activities.
Art collections are on show at the Canterbury Heritage Museum in Stour Street – where you can learn about the history of the city.
